Our speaker, Brady Bala, is a beekeeper and driving force behind the area's locally grown markets. He will talk to us about bee health, availability of organically grown foods locally, plus other Co-op and Farmer's Market opportunities we have as consumers. We can support local farmers and improve the quality of our families' food in the process.
The news is full of stories about people starving in other parts of the world while we in this country throw out food regularly. Are we lucky . . . blessed? What has protected us from the horror suffered elsewhere?
For most of this country's history farming has been a mainstay of the economy. Local farms assured that grocery store shelves were full. Those local farms have slowly been replaced by corporate farms. In addition, more and more of our food is being imported from around the world. As the price of the fuel needed to ship food rises, and corporate profit drives farm decisions, could we become vulnerable to some of the same forces that have left those in other parts of the world hungry? Local behavior or choices may be more powerful then you think.
All are invited to gather at a local restaurant for lunch, after the meeting. You can help pick the place; go to http://civicgoals.mee... and vote for your choice.
